Night Escalator Engineer, South East London. £62k + £12k bonus, 4 nights on / 4 off. Prevent breakdowns rather than just fix them, with real autonomy and digital tools.
We usually respond within a week
🌍 Who are we?
Operating across Europe and Asia, WeMaintain specialises in the maintenance and modernisation of lifts, escalators, automatic doors and fire safety systems, combining hands-on technical expertise with technology and data.
Our approach is built on a simple belief: maintenance can be more reliable, transparent and effective when teams have the right tools, the autonomy to make decisions and a clear understanding of what’s happening across the equipment they look after.
Since 2026, Otis has been our majority shareholder. WeMaintain continues to operate independently, retaining its own organisation and culture while benefiting from additional resources to support our growth.
Three core values guide the way we work every day:
Care (looking after others): treating colleagues and customers with respect, consideration and a genuine sense of responsibility.
Grit (determination): seeing things through with high standards, commitment and perseverance.
Uniqueness (being different): embracing different perspectives, fresh ideas and new ways of doing things.
Our ambition is to raise the standards of maintenance, alongside the people who make it happen every day.
👀 About the Role
At a glance
Salary: £62,000 per year + £12,000 annual bonus
Shift pattern: fixed nights, 4 nights on / 4 nights off
Area: South East London
We’re looking for an experienced Night Escalator Engineer to look after escalators across our customer sites in South East London, working a fixed 4 nights on / 4 nights off pattern.
Night work gives you the time to do things properly. With equipment out of regular use, you can carry out thorough inspections, planned maintenance and repairs, and get to the root cause of faults rather than moving from one breakdown to the next. Our digital tools give you each escalator’s maintenance history and condition, so you can spot developing faults before they become breakdowns. We want you to spend less time on unnecessary complexity and more time on what you do best: maintaining equipment, solving problems and keeping it safe.
🔎 What you’ll do
Carry out planned maintenance and detailed inspections of mechanical, electrical and safety components.
Spot worn or deteriorating parts and recommend corrective work before they cause failures.
Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults and carry out effective repairs, aiming for a first-time fix.
Complete planned repairs and support major component replacements when required.
Test and adjust safety devices after maintenance or repairs, follow risk assessment and isolation procedures, and only return equipment to service when it is safe.
Respond to overnight callouts, assess faults and take the right action.
Record interventions in our digital tools and give clear handovers to the day teams.
Share recurring issues so that underlying causes can be fixed rather than repeatedly treating the symptoms.
👑 Who we’re looking for
An experienced escalator engineer who takes pride in doing things properly, is confident making technical decisions independently and is comfortable with the realities of night work.
What you’ll need
Proven hands-on experience maintaining, diagnosing and repairing escalators
Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills, including reading technical drawings and schematics
NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in lift/escalator, electrical or mechanical engineering, or equivalent industry experience
The confidence to work independently on night shifts and make sound technical decisions
A thorough understanding of safe working practices, including risk assessments, isolation and lock-off procedures
Clear communication with colleagues, customers and site security teams, including accurate technical handovers
What would make you stand out
Experience resolving complex or recurring escalator faults
Hands-on involvement in major escalator repairs or component replacements
Experience of night maintenance or sites where access is restricted during normal hours
Familiarity with digital maintenance reporting tools
💡 What you should know before joining us
Fixed night shifts: you’ll work 4 nights on / 4 nights off, without alternating between day and night shifts.
Real autonomy: you’ll assess situations and make technical decisions on site, with our technical team behind you when needed.
A mix of planned and reactive work: you’ll combine planned maintenance, repairs and overnight callouts.
Safety first: procedures are followed rigorously, and equipment never goes back into service unless it is safe.
This role will particularly suit someone who enjoys hands-on engineering and taking the time to get to the root of technical issues. It may be less suited to someone looking for a daytime role.
🎁 What we offer
A hands-on engineering role with a direct impact on equipment safety and reliability.
Genuine technical autonomy, supported by an experienced Operations team.
The opportunity to work with modern tools and digital maintenance systems.
An international working environment with teams bringing a wide range of expertise.
Opportunities for professional development and internal mobility.
Base salary: £62,000 per year.
Annual bonus: £12,000.
Full-time, night shift position based in South East London.
4 nights on / 4 nights off shift pattern.

We carefully review every application. We’re not necessarily looking for someone who ticks every single box on a job description, and we know that the strongest career paths aren’t always the most conventional.
We also recognise that women, in particular, can be less likely to apply for a position unless they meet every listed requirement. So, if you’re reading this and thinking, “This role sounds like a great fit, but I don’t quite tick every box”, we’d genuinely encourage you to apply anyway. What matters most to us is what you can bring to the role, how you think, how you collaborate with others and the impact you could have at WeMaintain.
We value diversity in backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, and we’re committed to creating an inclusive working environment. Every application is considered fairly, regardless of background, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, beliefs or personal circumstances.
