Night Escalator Engineer – M/F/X
Make the most of quieter nights to maintain, diagnose and repair escalators across London. Enjoy real technical autonomy, a 4-on/4-off shift pattern and a strong focus on safety and quality.
We usually respond within a week
🌍 Who are we?
Operating across Europe and Asia, WeMaintain specialises in the maintenance and modernisation of lifts, escalators, automatic doors and fire safety systems, combining hands-on technical expertise with technology and data.
Our approach is built on a simple belief: maintenance can be more reliable, transparent and effective when teams have the right tools, the autonomy to make decisions and a clear understanding of what's happening across the equipment they look after.
Since 2026, Otis has been our majority shareholder. WeMaintain continues to operate independently, retaining its own organisation and culture while benefiting from additional resources to support our growth.
Three core values guide the way we work every day:
Care (looking after others): treating colleagues and customers with respect, consideration and a genuine sense of responsibility.
Grit (determination): seeing things through with high standards, commitment and perseverance.
Uniqueness (being different): embracing different perspectives, fresh ideas and new ways of doing things.
Our ambition is to raise the standards of maintenance, alongside the people who make it happen every day.
👀 Why we're hiring
We're looking for a Night Escalator Engineer to join our Field Operations team in London, working a 4 nights on / 4 nights off shift pattern.
Maintaining escalators in busy buildings requires a different approach when much of the work takes place overnight. These quieter periods create an opportunity to carry out thorough inspections, planned maintenance and repairs while equipment is out of regular use.
At WeMaintain, we want our engineers to do more than respond to breakdowns. We believe in identifying problems early, understanding the causes of recurring faults and taking the time to carry out work properly.
You'll be responsible for maintaining and repairing escalators across our customer sites, working with the wider Operations team to keep equipment safe, reliable and available when it's needed.
Your challenge will be to use your technical expertise and independence to prevent avoidable breakdowns, resolve faults effectively and maintain high standards of safety and quality across every intervention.
🔎 What makes this role different at WeMaintain?
Night engineering comes with its own challenges, but also offers the opportunity to focus on the technical work that keeps escalators running reliably.
Rather than simply moving from one breakdown to the next, you'll have the opportunity to carry out detailed maintenance, investigate faults and contribute to the long-term reliability of the equipment you look after.
In practice, you'll be responsible for:
Keeping escalators running safely and reliably: carrying out planned maintenance and detailed inspections of mechanical, electrical and safety components.
Preventing breakdowns before they happen: identifying worn or deteriorating parts, recognising early signs of failure and recommending the appropriate corrective work.
Diagnosing and resolving faults: investigating mechanical and electrical problems, carrying out effective repairs and aiming for a first-time fix whenever possible.
Carrying out repairs and replacements: completing planned repair work and supporting more substantial component replacements when required.
Maintaining safety standards: testing and adjusting safety devices following maintenance or repairs, following risk assessment and isolation procedures, and ensuring equipment is safe before returning it to service.
Responding to overnight call-outs: assessing faults, identifying appropriate solutions and taking the necessary action while maintaining safe working practices.
Improving equipment reliability: identifying recurring issues and sharing your observations so that underlying causes can be addressed rather than repeatedly treating the symptoms.
Keeping accurate records and communicating effectively: using digital tools to document interventions, report outstanding issues and provide clear handovers to the day teams.
We use technology and data to give our engineers better visibility of equipment condition and maintenance history, helping them make informed decisions in the field.
You'll have the autonomy to use your technical judgement while remaining connected to a wider team that shares information, supports one another and works towards the same goal: safer, more reliable equipment for our customers.
👑 Who we're looking for
We're looking for an experienced Escalator Engineer who takes pride in doing things properly, understands the importance of preventative maintenance and is confident making technical decisions independently. You'll need to be comfortable with the realities of night work, where sound judgement, attention to detail and a disciplined approach to safety are particularly important. Beyond technical ability, we're interested in how you approach problems: whether you investigate the underlying cause, take ownership of your interventions and communicate clearly with colleagues and customers.
What you'll need
Proven hands-on experience maintaining, diagnosing and repairing escalators.
Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills, including the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
An NVQ Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in lift/escalator, electrical or mechanical engineering, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
The confidence to work independently during night shifts and make appropriate technical decisions.
A thorough understanding of safe working practices, including risk assessments, isolation and lock-off procedures.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality maintenance and repairs.
The ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, customers and site security teams, including providing accurate technical handovers.
What would make you stand out
Experience identifying and resolving complex or recurring escalator faults.
Hands-on involvement in major escalator repairs or component replacements.
Experience working on night maintenance operations or in environments where access to equipment is restricted during normal operating hours.
Familiarity with digital maintenance reporting tools and structured technical documentation.
These are genuine advantages, but they're not all essential. If your experience matches the core requirements and you identify with the way we work, we'd encourage you to apply.
💡 What you should know before joining us
We believe in being upfront about what a role involves. This position comes with:
A 4 nights on / 4 nights off shift pattern, so you'll need to be comfortable working overnight.
A significant level of technical autonomy, with responsibility for assessing situations and making sound decisions in the field.
A combination of planned maintenance, fault-finding, repairs and responses to overnight call-outs.
A strong emphasis on safety, including following procedures rigorously and never returning equipment to service unless it is safe to do so.
The need to document interventions carefully and maintain clear communication with colleagues working on different shifts.
In return, you'll have the opportunity to work on a range of technical challenges, benefit from the quieter overnight periods to carry out detailed engineering work and take real ownership of the quality of your interventions. This role will particularly suit someone who enjoys hands-on engineering, solving problems independently and taking the time to get to the root of technical issues. It may be less suited to someone looking for a daytime role or an environment where technical decisions are always made by someone else.
